Urinary Tract infections (UTIs) are a common bacterial or fungal infection responsible for over 15 million office and emergency room visits each year in the United States. The traditional method of pathogen identification in UTIs, which is culture-based, has several disadvantages, such as taking a long time, lacking sensitivity, and missing positive cases. Silverstar Dx Diagnostics now offers a new solution to pathogen detection and UTIs, real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) for Urinary Tract Microbiota. Using qPCR, Silverstar Diagnostics can accurately identify the species of the pathogen and detect resistance genes expressed by the pathogen to certain pharmacotherapies. The qPCR method is over 25% more accurate when compared to traditional culture-based methods of detection. Pathogens that can be detected include bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, and fungi such as Candida albicans and Candida glabrata.
